The Blind Stokers Club (BSC)  //  visit website.

A program to introduce and share the simple pleasures of recreational cycling with those who can not see well enough to pilot a bike.

The BSC operating model unites a vision-impaired stoker (rear position) with an experienced captain (front position) on a tandem bicycle built for two. Captains serve as mentor and coach for his/her stoker partner. Each participant pledges to participate in BSC rides and activities for the calendar year.

Cycling for Sight (CFS) is the centerpiece event in the BSC ride and activity calendar, and illuminates all elements in the BSC motto: Vision through imagination, teamwork and adventure.

The BSC applies principles of setting and attaining a goal, fund-raising, mentoring, teamwork, along with the joy and freedom of bicycling and the adventure of travel with a group.

Founded in 2007, in its first 3 years, BSC members pedaled over 40,000 member miles. Over 80 members of more than 40 tandem teams have completed the 3-day 200+ mile CFS tour. All CFS registrants are invited to join the BSC in a training ride program intended to prepare cyclists for success and enjoyment during the CFS tour.

Available this year are a limited number of travel sponsorships to enable distant members of the BSC to join the CFS coastal adventure tour. Click here to download the California Dreaming program MS Word file.

Sue Buckley and Dave Penegar

Dave and Sue are recipients of the 2010 CFS-BSC California Dreamin' Travel assist grant. They are working together in Knoxville, TN with a local Bicycle Club and a Visually Impaired young person's group (founded by Sue) to coordinate something like the BSC. Team TNT says: "We could use the connections and partnership with BSC to recruit local Pilots for our stokers and help with all the other needs to get the rides rolling." San Diego BSC members can't wait to learn how to speak southern.

Mike Jennings and Julissa Cota

Mike Jennings and Julissa Cota

Julissa is new to the BSC and is riding for the first time on a tandem loaned by Dave Knop. Julissa loves outdoor activities and is new to tandem cycling. You can tell by her smile that she will have a lot to contribute to this years tour. Mike is a veteran racing and touring cyclist, and brings many miles of ride leadership to the CFS peloton.

Kermit Cain and Harrison Tu

Kermit Cain and Harrison Tu

Kermit is a dedicated member of the BSC who was unable to enjoy the CFS tour in 2009. He is back on a tandem with Harrison, also a steadfast member of the BSC and CFS. Harrison was able to join the last leg of the tour last year, but he wants more, MUCH MORE, and will make a wonderful match with Kermit on this years coastal adventure tour. This is one of the most intellectual and conversational tandem teams around; also one of the fastest!

Chuck Corum and David Kuttnauer

Chuck Corum and David Kuttnauer

Chuck has many cross-country and cross-continent miles in his cycling legs. He has many single bikes, but is grateful to ride the Eric Lloyd Santana Sovereign loaned to the club. Chuck was recruited by his longtime family friend David, who was recruited by BSC stoker Robyn Dunn. David lost is sight recently to glaucoma surgery complications, and uses fitness goals to keep a positive outlook. David and Chuck are excited to be partnered on tandem in the Blind Stokers Club, and looking for memorable miles ahead.

Don Counts and Art Jones

Don Counts and Art Jones

On any given day, you can see Art riding a tandem bicycle with his brother-in-law, Ivan (not pictured), in San Diego. Art (on the left) has been blind since his 21st birthday as a result of diabetes. He is active, lifting weights, swimming and cycling. This year he will be captained by CFS and BSC veteran, Don Counts. Art is truly an inspiration to fellow members of the Major Taylor Cycling Club of San Diego. Last year Art and Ivan received the First Annual BSC Award, reflecting their enthusiasm, cycling skills, and leadership in the BSC. Don and Art will be riding fast, very fast, as they know no other way.

Abe Naiditch and John Morrison

Abe Naiditch and John Morrison

John is a founding member of the Blind Stokers Club, having supported related activities for many years. John & principal stoker Stacy live in Orange County and get around a lot on tandem. Abe is one of the newest and youngest at heart in the BSC, sporting a birth certificate from 1919. After being a lifelong cyclist, when Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma made it unsafe for Abe to ride his bike, John and the BSC have extended his enjoyment in cycling. Look out for this team, of considerable experience, in the CFS CycloRallye.

Greg Birch and Jim Miller

Greg Birch and Jim Miller

Greg is a founder of the Cyclo-Vets, a local cycling club that benefits San Diego. He has taken up tandem cycling and is touring with Jim (on the left), a veteran cyclist in the BSC and CFS. Last year he missed the CFS tour participating in an outdoor backpacking trek. They are riding Jim's TREK T2000 donated by the Veterans Administration. Jim is also a veteran of the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge tour.

Stephen Stewart and Andrew Oliver

Stephen Stewart and Andrew Oliver

Steve came to the BSC through the Challenged Athletes Foundation. He heard about CFS through the Qualcomm Million Dollar Challenge tour in 2009. An active cyclist, he rides tandem with wife, Sue, also an active cyclist who is BSC Transport Coordinator this year. Andrew is back for a second tour of CFS. Andrew embodies a spirit of vitality, exploration and adventure well-aligned with CFS.

Mark Prophet and Jeremy Poincenot

Mark Prophet and Jeremy Poincenot

Jeremy is very active, recently won the 'Spirit of Joshua' Award at the Carlsbad Half-Marathon. He is a ranked golfer with great initiative. In 2009, he couldn't join the CFS Tour, but did it on his own using route slips to raise funds for Leber Disease. Watch for Jeremy on MTV "True Life" Series this fall. Way to go Jeremy! Jeremy's captain is fraternity brother Mark Prophet, majoring in exercise physiology.

Fred Dudek and John Miller

Fred Dudek and John Miller

Fred is a Scripps Ranch resident and attorney who commutes on bike to work. He is an experienced cyclist but new to tandem cycling. John works at General Atomics and is involved in developing new technologies. Paired as a new team, they are riding the famous Silver Bullet tandem generously loaned by the Tarkingtons to support the BSC.

Ian Gayola and Eric Lloyd

Ian Gayola and Eric Lloyd

Ian is a founding member of the BSC. He's a junior at Clairemont HS and extremely athletic. Whether it's mixed martial arts or cycling, Ian is out there making it happen. Eric has participated as a substitute captain the last two years and has been riding tandems for the last four years. This year he's riding full-time with Ian. Ian and Eric ride regularly together throughout the week and are looking forward to putting their fitness to the test during the Cycling for Sight Tour.

Andy Granda and John Sheldrake

As a young man, Andy was an avid cyclist, surfer and skateboarder. He was born with Usher Syndrome Type I, which is causing his peripheral vision to gradually degenerate. This hasn't slowed Andy down. He's back in the saddle again, only now it's on the back of a tandem. Andy's glad to feel the wind on his face again, and he's having a blast hitting blazing speeds with the help of his pilot, John Sheldrake. John's cycling resume includes almost every kind of race you can think of. He even spent two years as bike messenger in his home town of Chicago. John is enjoying the camaraderie of riding with Andy and the BSC, and looks forward to many more rides together.

John is an endorphine junkie who lives for the great outdoors. He loves the sun and balmy temperatures that this vast playground called San Diego has to offer. From bicycling ( both road and mountain ) to hiking, trail running, kayaking and rock climbing, San Diego is a dream come true. He has such a passion for the great outdoors that he can't help but spread the gospel of the active lifestyle. When riding alongside the Ocean with Larry, he shares the squawk of the seagulls, the crashing of the waves and the smell of the salty breeze. He once saw footage of tandem track racing at the paraolympics and thought of the amazing sense of esprit de corps those two riders must feel. When I found out about the BSC, he knew he was was meant to participate.

Andrew Burr and Daniel Powell

Lived in San Diego since march of last year. Heard about the BSC during a charity walk and joined this past year. Never been on tandem before and or rode a road bike. Looking forward to my first CFS ride and then 4 days later i have another charity ride of 230 miles. The longest i rode in my life before joining the club was probably 5 miles on a bike. Originally from Oneonta, NY. I have travelled and lived all over the country including time in NYC, Orlando, Las Vegas, Maui, Northern California and now residing in beautiful Solana Beach, SD. I am currently working at a assisted living facility as a waiter and enjoying taking care of some amazing elderly people everyday. Played sports all my life up until i had vision loss in 1993 and then had to adjust to the sports that i was able to do with my limited sight. I am happy i found cycling for both the amazing shape it keeps you in and the social atmosphere it provides.

Daniel Powell has been a tandem captain since 1988. His highlights as a tandem captain include: * Cycling for Sight, 200 miles over three days * New York City to Washington D. C., 280 miles over three days (twice). * The original Hawaii Ironman course on Oahu (112 miles) * Rosorito to Ensenada, 50 miles. (three times) * Solvang Century. (two times) * San Francisco to Solana Beach, over eight days. * Santa Barbara to La Jolla, over three days, as part of the Million Dollar Challenge. Daniel loves helping the Visually impaired get outside and play. He has learned that he sees more of the world when he is with a blind person.

Chris Procello and Peter Dawson

Peter is an experienced cyclist having ridden tandems for 33 years and, while this is his first Cycling for Sight ride, he regularly bikes organized rides, his favorite being the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. Peter loves the outdoors and, when he’s not training for an event, is a Rehabilitation Supervisor at the California Department of Rehabilitation. He lives in San Diego with his wife, Dawn, and their 7 year-old daughter, Olivia. Chris is an avid road cyclist who gets most of his miles in commuting from work. He is also an outdoor enthusiast, enjoying mountain biking, hiking, and camping. Chris is an Analyst at UC Irvine and lives in San Diego with his wife, Karin.
